Entrprenuerial Spirit

I guess you could say I've always had the artistic entrepreneurial spirit since I was 6 years old.  When I was a young girl growing up in Philadelphia, my Italian grandmother, Theresa Ervalino taught me how to make everything.  Nothing was store bought.  We made wine, bread, pasta, sauces, desserts, clothing and yes, tapestries.  My grandfather and uncles were stone masons, carpenters and bricklayers.  My grandmother owned and operated a grocery store.  My father went to college for pharmacy and back then it was the American dream to go to college, get married, own the big house and you were essentially living the dream!!  My dad would always drill into my head that I would follow him in his profession but secretly I would always daydream of fashion design.  I would look through high fashion magazines and design clothing for myself and my dolls.  I can honestly say I knew from that very early age that being an artist was who I was.

Fast forward a few years, I was an excellent student and went on to earn scholarship money to attend college, majoring in Finance and Accounting.  My dad always wanted me to have a "real career" and stability as most parents want for their children.  I went ahead and had a very successful banking career and am now retiring from Finance.  My dad was very proud of me for "achieving the American Dream".

I have always carried with me that desire to create and design along with my entrepreneurial spirit to make a name for myself instead of working for a large financial institution.  One day I googled "online gift shop" and stumbled upon something very new to me ~ Etsy.  So it sounded like something that would work for me.  I signed up and ~ voila!!  Here I am now ~ longrunners.etsy.com.  I have connected with so many customers, event planners, bloggers, editors, etc.  I feel like I have come full circle and am living my "American Dream" of doing what I totally love ~ designing and creating beautiful home décor.

Black and White Stripes

I had many inquiries this week for black and white striped table runners so I thought I would post some pictures I had available from a recent wedding in West Chester, PA planned by local wedding planner, Nicole of lovelygirlsevents.com.  I also came across some black and white accessories from the Pottery Barn that would look great for any backyard or beach event.

New South Wales ~ Australian Wedding

My little shop is continually emerging into new market places and growing globally.  Here are some of Stephanie Lloyd's wedding photos from Australia.

Enjoy this holiday week friends and keep cool.  We are spending vacation in North Carolina.  Will be working on some fantastic new ideas and refreshing designs when I return.

Press Feature on MSN.com

{For the Love of Chevron}

A photo editor for MSN.com Living contacted me this past week to do a press feature on my shop.  It seems as though the more orders I execute for weddings equates to more professional wedding photos which catches the eyes of editors.  Professional work leads to great photos which translates into free advertising for my shop.  My shop is growing by leaps and bounds with very minimal overhead.  This increases my bottom line and makes me very happy.  To anyone considering an entrepreneurial venture, I say go for it.  Start small and invest very little.  When you come up with a unique idea or niche product and can present it well in the marketplace, consumers will embrace it.  The handmade maketplace is exploding everywhere.  Buy American and keep jobs here!!
